Arundel Middle School teacher Randi Burkhardt has been named Physical Education Teacher of the Year SHAPE Maryland. This award is given annually to teachers who, in addition to possessing outstanding teaching skills, are positive role models and exhibit the qualities of personal health and fitness in their daily lives.
Burkhardt is entering her 13th year of teaching and has spent her entire career at Arundel Middle School. She has been an integral part of creating welcoming and engaging classroom environments in her health and physical education classes so that all students feel a true sense of belonging. She has also supported the curriculum development of one of middle school physical education’s newest courses, Unified Physical Education, and plays an active role in her school through her involvement in various committees and leadership roles.
“My goal for teaching is to create an environment where all students can be active learners,” Burkhardt said. “I continue to strive to be a positive role model to my students to help promote their decision to live and maintain a healthy lifestyle.”
“Ms. Burkhardt is an outstanding educator who approaches every day with an attitude of excellence and professionalism,” said Arundel Middle School Principal Scott Edwards. “She is compassionate, kind, cares deeply for her students, and instills in them the value of a healthy living style. She ensures that inclusion of all students is a priority in her classes, particularly in her work with our Unified Sports program. Ms. Burkhardt exemplifies “Belong Grow Succeed” and all of us at Arundel Middle are so proud of her.”
In addition to Burkhardt, SHAPE Maryland also will honor AACPS health and physical education teachers with Simon McNeely awards reflecting their outstanding contributions to the teaching profession. AACPS recipients of these awards are Austin Eagle of Arundel High School, Tracey Dieringer of Southern Middle School, Marissa Neumann of Glen Burnie High School and Erin Madden of Davidsonville Elementary School.
SHAPE Maryland’s mission is to enhance and promote the health and wellness of all the citizens of Maryland. The SHAPE Maryland organization provides advocacy, resources, and professional learning opportunities designed to promote high-quality programs in health and physical education for students in prekindergarten through 12th grade and advance and unify the professions of health education, physical education, and other related partners.
These individuals will be recognized for their accomplishments in October at the annual SHAPE Maryland Awards Banquet.
