Quint Karlsson of Crofton Middle School outlasted 24 other school level spellers on Saturday, March 9, 2024, to capture the title at the 36th annual Anne Arundel County Spelling Bee.
Quint correctly spelled the word “emolument” in the eighth round to win the championship. Beorn Moon of Lindale Middle School finished second and Kasey Capili of MacArthur Middle School. Moon and Capili had to take part in a “spell off” to decide second and third place.
The Anne Arundel County Spelling Bee is presented annually by the Anne Arundel County Public Schools Office of Secondary Reading, English, & Integrated Literacy. This year’s presenting sponsors were Educational Systems Federal Credit Union and DALY. The event co-sponsors are Development Facilitators, Inc. (DFI), M&T Bank, and Horace Mann. The year’s event sponsors were American College of Education, Care First, National Teacher Association, Ricoh, and Whiting Turner.
Quint will represent Anne Arundel County in the 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.
