FAQS

Q: Our school is experiencing a traumatic event. What supports are available?
A  The school principal will talk with Board of Education support staff to determine exactly what supports are needed by school-based student services team members to respond to this event.  If needed, a cluster trauma response team will come to the school to help school-based staff provide counseling and other support to students and staff.  Your student services team members can provide you with suggestions and resources to help you talk with your child about the traumatic event.

Q: How can I find resources for mental health support for my child/student?
A:  Your school-based student services team members can provide you with names and contact information for mental health providers and they can assist you in accessing those services.

Q: What mental health supports are available in my school?
A:  Each school has a student services team made up of school counselor(s), school psychologist, pupil personnel worker, and school nurse.  Some schools also have a school social worker, as well. While these school-based mental health providers do not deliver long-term therapeutic services for students, they do provide prevention programs, such as delivering classroom lessons focusing on building social-emotional competence, and work with students individually or in small groups on a short-term basis to remediate school-related challenges.
