Celebrating Black History Month Monique Jackson - AACPS Chief of Student & Academic Supports #BlackHistoryMonth
about 2 months ago, Anne Arundel County Public Schools
Monique Jackson - AACPS Chief of Student & Academic Supports For Monique Jackson, education isn't just a career—it's a calling. As a fourth-generation educator, she has dedicated her life to shaping young minds and improving the school system at every level. Her journey began in 1998 as a substitute teacher. She then spent eight years as a history teacher, earning recognition for her excellence in the classroom, including being named the 2004 Maryland State Social Studies Teacher of the Year. Her dedication led her to leadership roles, serving five years as a school administrator before transitioning to the AACPS central office, where she continued to advocate for students and teachers alike. In July 2022, she stepped up as Acting Superintendent, further cementing her legacy in education. Mrs. Jackson credits her passion for teaching to her mother, her hero, who taught for 40 years, dedicating 34 years to Mayo Elementary School. Watching her mother find joy in teaching inspired Mrs. Jackson to seek that same fulfillment in her own career. She now lives by the powerful motto: "Do what's in the best interest of children. Leave your community better every day. Always be the best example you can." To current AACPS students, she offers this advice: "Learn from your mistakes and do better next time!" With a lifelong commitment to education and an unwavering dedication to students' success, Monique Jackson continues to leave an incredible impact. Mrs. Jackson can often be seen at AACPS school events and volunteering at concession stands.

#TBT Spotlight on CTE Mr. Palmer, a former student of the Electrician Program at North Arundel Votech, is now the Electrical Instructor at the Center of Applied Technology North (CAT-North). "I'm the Electrical teacher at Center of Applied Technology North formerly known as North Arundel Votech when I was a student in electricity back in 1986. When I graduated high school, I went into the electrical industry. I remember telling my teacher on the last day of school that one day, I will have his job teaching this class. In 2018 I got the opportunity and it's an amazing feeling being in the same classroom I started out in and passing on my knowledge to the next generation."

Celebrating Black History Month Thurgood Marshall Memorial - State House Square, Annapolis, MD #BlackHistoryMonth
about 2 months ago, Anne Arundel County Public Schools
Thurgood Marshall Memorial State House Square, Annapolis, MD The Thurgood Marshall Memorial honors the great civil rights leader and first African-American U.S. Supreme Court justice. Located on Lawyer’s Mall, or the State House Square, in Annapolis, the memorial was built on the site of the old Court of Appeals where Thurgood Marshall argued his earliest civil rights cases. The memorial was dedicated in October of 1996, three years after Marshall’s death. A graduate of Frederick Douglass Senior High in Baltimore and Howard University School of Law in DC, Thurgood Marshall dedicated his life to the civil rights movement. His fight for “Equal Justice Under the Law” earned him the nickname “Mr. Civil Rights.” In 1954, Marshall won the landmark case Brown vs. the Board of Education in which the Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional, beginning the long journey towards the desegregation of our nation’s public schools.
