Kendall Allman of Archbishop Spalding High School was named the Grand Award Winner at the recent 59th annual Anne Arundel County Public Schools Regional Science and Engineering Expo Awards Ceremony.

Allman’s Deep-Sea Octocoral Mitogenomics project studied the DNA of deep-sea soft corals to understand their diversity, evolution, and conservation. Using whole-genome skimming, scientists quickly gather genetic data to see how coral species are related and how they have changed over time.

Allman is one of four high school students who will represent Anne Arundel County at the 2025 International Science and Engineering Fair in Columbus, Ohio. The others and their projects are:

  • Megan Hylan, Meade High School, The Audience is Listening

  • Jacob Scanlon and Anna Schneider, Broadneck HIgh School, Measuring Cell-Free Protein Synthesis with NADH

In addition, five middle school students earned the nationally recognized Thermo Fisher Junior Innovators Award. These students will have the opportunity to represent Anne Arundel County at the 2025 Thermo Fisher Junior Innovators Challenge in Washington, D.C. They are:

  • Eliana Rivera, Severn School, A New Milk: Replacing the Cows

  • Evan Stohl, Jaqueline Stohl, and Bradley Roher, Severn River Middle School, Plant Pal 3000

  • Liliana Simmons, Magothy River Middle School, Get a Grip: Electrified
