Karen McDonough

Karen McDonough, Manager of International Family Outreach Programs, since 2022 and a member of the Anne Arundel County Public Schools family since 1998, has been honored for her tireless efforts to bridge gaps that are critical to the success of multilingual learners and their families.

McDonough was honored with a Michelle Obama Award by County Executive Steuart Pittman and the Caucus of African American Leaders at a celebration Monday night. She was one of 14 recipients of the awards, which recognize women who have made a lasting impact in their communities through leadership, mentorship, and education.

“I am deeply honored to receive this award,” McDonough said. “This recognition is not just for me, but for all of us in the International Family Outreach Programs who strive every day to make a difference. I share this honor with our team of Bilingual Facilitators who work tirelessly with families every day. Our work is about building bridges that connect cultures, languages, and hearts and helping ensure multilingual learners and their families valued and supported as vital members of our school community. This award reinforces our commitment to continue nurturing an inclusive environment where every voice is heard and every dream is possible."

In her work, McDonough oversees a team of bilingual facilitators who work directly with families and help them navigate issues related to the school system and their students. That includes designing and coordinating family and community outreach programs and maintaining relationships with agencies and providers that serve immigrant communities.

She also works closely with the International Welcome Center and a contractual interpreter bank that provides services to families in situations like parent-teacher conferences.

“Karen has been a cornerstone in transforming our approach to international family outreach,” said AACPS Director of School and Family Partnerships Jennifer Lombardi. “Her unwavering dedication and innovative strategies have not only empowered countless multilingual learners and their families but have also set a new standard for inclusivity and support within our school system. This recognition is a testament to her profound impact on our community."
