Candis Henson

Candis Henson, a member of the Anne Arundel County Public Schools family since 2007 who assists to schools and families by coordinating wraparound supports for optimal student achievement, has earned a “Few of the Many Award” from County Executive Steuart Pittman in partnership with the Caucus of African American Leaders.

The awards are given annually to individuals who embody the spirit of resilience, dedication, and impact and recognize the profound connection between African Americans and the impact of their work on the county. This year’s theme, “African Americans and Labor,” honors individuals who have contributed exceptionally to the community through their work and service.

As a proud product of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Public Schools, this community has been a cornerstone in my life and has shaped who I am today,” said Henson, who works closely with school/family liaisons as they empower marginalized students and their families to navigate any barriers to achieving academic and social/emotional success in school by leveraging school, family, and community resources. “Everything I do for the youth and families in this area comes from my heart. You never know who might change a young person’s outlook on life, and I hope, in some small way, I can be that person for at least one of the youth I work with.”

In addition to her AACPS responsibilities, Henson is the middle school coordinator and family support specialist with Charting Careers, an Annapolis-based organization that inspires youth to discover their power and reach goals through mentoring, life-enriching opportunities, and family partnerships. She also has led transformative trips for young scholars to colleges and has fought against the targeting of youth by tobacco companies.

Additionally, Henson has orchestrated community events for Meade area schools in partnership with AACPS and Friends of Meade, a coalition of leaders who work to support schools in the Meade cluster.

Henson and other recipients will receive their awards during a ceremony on March 19 at Maryland Hall. For more about the awards program, click here.
