Delay/Closing - Weather Notifications

How Are Families and Staff Notified?

Changes to school schedules caused by inclement weather or other emergency conditions are announced:

  • On the AACPS Alerts automated telephone, email, and text message notification system

  • On the free AACPS mobile app (available in Apple and Google Play stores)

  • On the Alert Banner on this website (pop-up activated for urgent messages)

  • On AACPS' social media accounts:  Facebook, Instagram, and X (Twitter) as well as on all
    school-specific web pages

  • On major area radio and television stations

The school system’s website; Facebook, X(Twitter), and Instagram pages; individual school X (Twitter) pages; and this website remain the best places to check for accurate, up-to-date information on school closings and delays.

How Are Weather-related Decisions Made?

When inclement weather occurs, AACPS personnel are out assessing the roads as soon as it is practical. Decisions about delayed openings or closings are made with many factors in mind, most notably the condition of school lots and walkways, the condition of roads, and the condition of sidewalks students must travel to get to school.

It is not always possible to make decisions the evening before an anticipated event.

Families and employees are notified as soon as possible after decisions are made. Same-day decisions regarding the opening of schools and offices are communicated electronically as soon as possible and by telephone beginning at 5:30 a.m.

In cases where a two-hour delay is announced, a re-evaluation of conditions will take place in that two-hour window and any changes in the status of school operations will be announced accordingly.

Below is information on the various closings and delays that could be announced.

Schools Closed, Code Red

Schools Closed, Code Blue with Liberal Leave

Schools Opening Two Hours Late

Schools Closing Two Hours Early

Virtual Learning During Inclement Weather

Under state law, school systems may not switch to virtual learning during inclement weather UNLESS they have utilized all inclement weather days built into their school year calendar. AACPS has three inclement weather days built into the calendar.

When After-School Activities Are Canceled

  • The extended day for Apex Arts Magnet Program students is not considered an after-school activity for cancellation purposes. Extended day closures will be communicated with a transportation directive when determined.

  • When after-school activities are canceled or schools close early for inclement weather, there will be no evening high school.

  • The cancellation of school-sponsored after-school activities does not necessarily cancel events sponsored by other agencies. For the status of activities sponsored by agencies other than AACPS including after-school day care, please check with that agency.

  • Employee duty requirements are spelled out in the October 24, 2024, memorandum to all employees from the Division of Human Resources.
