IB MYP at MacArthur Middle

The IB Middle Years Programme at MacArthur

Imagine a worldwide community of schools, educators and students with a shared mission to empower young people with the values, knowledge and skills to create a better and more peaceful world. This is the International Baccalaureate (IB).

"Building a solid academic foundation, the Middle Years Programme (MYP) develops students’ confidence in managing their own learning and making connections between their learning in the classroom and the real world." (ibo.org/programmes)

Did you know that, along with Annapolis Middle and Old Middle Middle North, MacArthur is one of only three Anne Arundel County middle schools to complete the rigorous authorization process to become an IB World School?

MacArthur serves scholars in grades 6-8 and implements years 1-3 of the 5 year IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) in partnership with Meade Senior High School.

Inclusive by design, the whole-school MYP at MacArthur benefits scholars of all interests and academic abilities. Scholars who successfully complete the five-year programme through grade 10 at Meade Senior High School are well-prepared to undertake the rigorous IB Diploma Programme (DP) or Career-related Programme (CP) in grades 11-12. Assessment in the MYP

How Will My Son Or Daughter Be Graded In The MYP?

For most projects and tests, students will be graded on an MYP rubric. While these are provided to us from IB, teachers can adapt them to make rubrics specific to the task students are completing. The rubrics provide feedback to students; since they are used to the rubrics in each class and they do not change over the two years at Meade, it allows them to see their own growth in each subject.

Though the rubrics used may be different from a traditional grade, teachers must report grades in alignment with the Anne Arundel County Public Schools grading policy. Currently, teachers use the MYP conversion chart to convert the rubric scores earned into percentage grades:
