General School Information

Welcome to the Odenton Elementary Community!

ENROLLING YOUR CHILD AT ODENTON ELEMENTARY

Students must attend the school in the area in which their parent or guardian lives.

To see if Odenton Elementary is your home school, use the application on the Locate Your School page.

Go to our Registration page for a full list of documents and links needed for enrollment.

CUSTODY PAPERS

Parents who have court-awarded custody of their child must have the custody papers on file in the school office; otherwise the school must release a child to either natural parent.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS & TELEPHONE

It is extremely important that every parent or guardian maintain an up-to-date address and working telephone number record at the school office. Please notify the school immediately if there is a change.

WITHDRAWING STUDENTS
Please inform the office as soon as you know you will be withdrawing your child from Odenton Elementary.

It takes 48 hours to process withdrawal information.

The information the office needs is:

  • Student's name

  • Teacher's name

  • Last day student will be at Odenton

  • Name of school (if in Anne Arundel County) student is going to or city and state if moving out of Anne Arundel County

  • Your new address

Withdrawal papers will be sent home with the student on their last day of school. If you prefer to pick them up, please inform the office.

STUDENT ATTENDANCE
Doors open at 7:40 a.m. for students. At 8:00 a.m., attendance is taken and instruction begins.

Children arriving after 8:00 a.m. are considered tardy and must report to the office accompanied by an adult to get a late pass. If they do not report to the office, they may be marked absent for the day. It is required that an adult accompany the student to the office to sign them in.

When students are marked absent, parents will receive an automated phone call to confirm the absence. Please send a note with your child within 3 days of returning to school after an absence. Notes received after 3 days cannot be excused.

Attendance is a critical factor in any child’s school success. Children should attend school every day, except in cases of illness or emergency. Regular attendance and promptness are good habits that are expected and appreciated at all levels of schooling.

DISMISSAL--IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Dismissal begins at 2:25 p.m.

If the dismissal plan for your child changes in any way, please notify the office directly at 410-222-6514 no later than 2:00 p.m. on the day the change is to occur or by sending a written note as soon as possible. Without a written or verbal request from an adult authorized to make dismissal decisions, your child will be dismissed according to their regular dismissal plan, without exception.

If someone other than the parent or guardian is sent to pick up a student, the office must be notified verbally or in writing by the parent or guardian, and the person picking up must present a valid form of identification before the student can be released into their care.

TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF YOUR CHILD, WE MUST ADHERE TO THESE POLICIES.

When a child is to be dismissed from school early (prior to 2:10), the parent or designated adult must come to the office, present valid identification, sign the early dismissal book and then wait in the lobby for the child to come from the classroom.

An Exceptional Transportation Request is available from the office for any special transportation needs (such as pick up by a temporary babysitter).

EARLY DISMISSAL PLANS

Please complete the “emergency dismissal” form and return it to school promptly. Schools may be closed early in the event of a snowstorm, flooding, or loss of electricity or water. Please make certain your child is aware of his/her plan for early dismissal days, which may be different from their regular routine. Buses should operate normally.

VISITORS

In order to provide a safe environment for our students, Odenton employs a secured entry, video surveillance and V-Soft identification system to monitor and verify the identity of all visitors entering the building.

Upon arrival at the building, ALL NON-STAFF VISITORS will be asked to buzz in at the call box by the main entrance (facing the main parking lot) and state their reason for entering the building. Upon entering, every visitor must report to the Main Office, provide a photo ID and wear an individualized identification sticker while in the building. Visitors in the building without a V-Soft sticker will be asked to return to the Main Office. Please remember to check out in the office when you leave the building.

FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR STUDENTS, STAFF AND VISITORS, IT IS CRITICAL THAT ALL VISITORS FOLLOW THIS PROCEDURE. PLEASE DO NOT HOLD ENTRANCE DOORS OPEN FOR OTHERS. IF YOU ARE AT THE ENTRANCE, PLEASE DIRECT ALL VISITORS TO BUZZ IN AT THE CALL BOX.

HOME-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION

The staff at Odenton Elementary maintains communication with parents through parent conferences, phone calls, email and messaging through the ClassDojo application. At the start of the school year, your child’s classroom teacher will send home directions for connecting to their ClassDojo account.

Additionally, teachers in all grades use the weekly Wednesday Work Folder to send home work, to share information and to communicate concerns and celebrations about your child's progress. Please check your child’s Wednesday Work Folder for notes from his or her teachers. Parents can also communicate with teachers by writing notes in the Wednesday Work Folder .
