Virtual Instruction Days (VIDs)

On inclement weather days or during emergency situations that AACPS implements virtual instruction, a virtual schedule will be followed. A link to virtual schedules is located at https://www.aacps.org/studentschedules. Information for students and families regarding Chromebook readiness, student engagement, and student attendance is included on all student VID schedules.

AACPS will delineate whether the VID is synchronous (live student instruction with teacher) or asynchronous (independent student learning).

Asynchronous Virtual Learning Day: (students work on their own)

Student assignments or activities for the asynchronous VID day will be posted by the teacher in Brightspace Courses for students to complete when an asynchronous virtual instruction day is chosen to be used in AACPS.  Please log in to your Brightspace class(es) by 2:00 PM to get your work for the day.  Logging into your Brightspace class(es) is how attendance will automatically be taken for the day.

Students are on their own to work on the assignments for the day; there will be no live instruction with teachers. However, elementary, middle, and high school teachers will be available virtually to answer questions or provide clarification on assignments for one hour during the school day.  Students needing teacher assistance can use the Google Meet link posted in their Brightspace class(es) to join their teacher virtually.  Elementary teachers will be available virtually from 10:00 AM -11:00 AM.

NOTE: Students will not be counted present for the asynchronous VID day unless they log into their Brightspace class(es) to locate their activities or assignments for the day.

Synchronous Virtual Learning Day (students work virtually with teachers)

Students in PreK through Grade 2 have Chromebooks at home for virtual learning use therefore they do not need to take them back and forth from school to home in preparation for a Virtual Instruction Day. Students in grades 3–5 are expected to take their Chromebooks home daily to be able to use for Virtual Instruction Days (VID), should the need arise. In addition, families of PreK–5 students should also make sure that student Chromebooks are charged and used at home regularly so that there are no problems with a student’s Chromebook when a synchronous Virtual Instruction Day is decided upon.

Attendance and Engagement The goal of a synchronous Virtual Instruction Day is to offer a day of instruction to engage students and support them to continue to learn even when the weather makes it challenging to put students and staff on our roads. The length of the school day will be shortened, attendance will be taken, but the VID instruction offered will not negatively impact a student’s grade. As such, following the VID, meaningful opportunities for students to make up work will be offered. Teachers will place Google Meet links in their Brightspace Courses so that students have access to log on to their Google Meets for virtual learning during synchronous Virtual Instruction Days. Many teachers will also place learning activities in their Brightspace courses to use during the VID.
