Adapted Physical Education
The State of Maryland mandates that all PreK-12 students have access to Physical Education. Local Education Agencies (LEAs) must make reasonable modifications and adaptations to ensure that students with disabilities can fully participate in the standards-based physical education program. Students who are identified by an Individualized Education Program (IEP) team as facing significant challenges in meeting grade-level outcomes due to one or more disabilities must receive the necessary services in the least restrictive environment.
Adapted Physical Education (APE) is a specially designed service for students with disabilities that helps them engage in general Physical Education classes, following the established curriculum when possible. The APE Academic Specialist collaborates with the general Physical Education teacher to create tailored programs that meet the individual needs of each student.
If a student has a medical condition that may require accommodations in Physical Education, please submit the AACPS Physical Assessment Form to the student’s specialist or physician. This will facilitate the development of an Individualized Physical Education Action Plan, which will become part of the student’s 504 plan, ensuring safe and successful participation in Physical Education.
