Dear Parents and Glen Burnie High School Community Members,
First quarter report cards are being distributed on Tuesday, November 17, 2009.  Please take a moment to sit down with your child(ren) to discuss their performance and your expectations of them. Acknowledge their achievements and encourage them to strive to improve where they may have fallen short. If you have concerns, contact the Counseling Center to set up a conference, but don’t delay. Second quarter interim reports will be sent home on Friday, December 11, 2009.

As part of American Education Week, National Parental Involvement Day takes place on Thursday, November 19, 2009.  Parents are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to visit your child(ren)’s classes as part of the system-wide effort to develop a meaningful partnership between home and school.

It’s hard to believe that the holiday season is upon us.  Cold, wintry temperatures can’t be far behind! Weather-related emergency information is contained in this issue.  Please review it with your student and devise a plan so that they know what to expect if schools open late or close early. Parents are reminded to listen to the radio and/or TV for unscheduled closures and/or delays.

Glen Burnie High School, as you are aware, is not your typical campus. Because we have several buildings of various ages, the heating systems are not always in sync, and temperatures can fluctuate from area to area. Monday mornings are typically coldest since the buildings have been closed up over the weekend.  Remember too that our students travel from building to building in the elements. Therefore, students are reminded that they should dress appropriately, ideally in layers, so that they are comfortable in their classes no matter the temperature.

November and December also bring new beginnings for winter sports and activities as well as week-long school closures. This time can be an ideal opportunity to reenergize and focus on academics.  Encourage your child(ren) to read during this period or to work on improving in a subject where they may be struggling. Visit a library or take a trip to a museum, but do something to stimulate their minds.  Let them know that each day can be a learning experience if they work at it. In the words of author Denis Waitley, “All of the top achievers I know are life-long learners ... looking for new skills, insights, and ideas. If they're not learning, they're not growing... not moving toward excellence.”  Help us as we guide them in this direction.

On behalf of the entire Glen Burnie High School faculty and staff, I wish you and yours a joyous holiday season.
