EnsemblesAdvisor - Mr. McMahanFind out more about the GBHS Music Program by visiting the Music Booster's WebsiteConcert BandConcert band is a music ensemble within the GBHS Music Program with members from grades 9-12 enrolled in band class. Focusing on many elements of instrumental performance: music reading, terminology, phrasing, tone, sight, reading, breath support, dynamics, rhythm, and balance. The course consists of two weekly after school band practices (Monday or Tuesday and Thursday) and sectional rehearsals. Students perform at both the Winter and Spring concerts, festivals, Glen Burnie Gala, middle schools, and in one out of state competition (spring trip). OrchestraThe Glen Burnie High School Orchestra consists of members from 9-12 and is led by Director Chris McMahan. The Orchestra program is part of our outstanding Music Department at GBHS. The Orchestra provides an excellent opportunity for our string players to develop the skills needed for a high level of musicianship and performance. Members participate in all activities including the spring trip, Glen Burnie Gala, and spring and winter concert performances. Color GuardThe GBHS Color Guard utilizes elements of dance, flag and rifle skills, and drill to provide a visual interpretation of the music performed by the marching band at home football games, pep rallies, parades, and competitions throughout Maryland. Color guard participates in both outdoor (fall) and indoor (spring) activities. Winter GuardDuring the winter season, the color guard performs as a separate ensemble, Winter Guard at competitive competitions throughout Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Similar to the fall season, color guard utilizes the same equipment, dance, and cisualization techniques while performing to recorded music at indoor facilities. Competitions are held on Saturdays throughout the second semester. The season finale includes a four-day competition trip to Wildwood, New Jersey where students compete in the All Chapter Championships, Weekend at Wildwood. Winter guard is an after-school, extra curricular activity and does not receive course credit. Indoor PercussionIndoor Percussion is an extra curricular activity which continues building the skills of students interested in drum and mallet percussion. Tryouts are held in early December with the ensemble beginning rehearsals in January. Competitions are held on Saturdays throughout the second semester. The season finale includes a four-day competition trip to Wildwood, New Jersey where students compete in the All Chapter Championships, Weekend at Wildwood. Jazz BandJazz Ensemble is an after-school, extra-curricular activity in which students at GBHS can become involved in. Auditions are held at the end of the marching season with rehearsals beginning mid-to-late November. This ensemble primarily rehearses on Fridays after school with occasional sectionals scheduled. Jazz ensemble performs both classical and modern jazz instrumental music at concerts, pep rallies, competitions, and area schools. One after school rehearsal is required each week. Pep BandThe GBHS Pep Band plays at all regular season home basketball games. Participation in the pep band is voluntary, but highly encouraged. The Pep Band always has a great time and you get to see the game absolutely free! Join us at the games and show your band and school spirit. |
