Meal Benefit Form* – Frequently Asked Questions

(*This form is also handed out at the school at the beginning of each year)

  1. How do I know if my child or children qualify for the Free or Reduced Price Meals program?

Find your Household Size and the corresponding Household Income in the Income Chart located on the back of the Meal Benefit Application.  The application may be denied if the combined gross income of your household members is greater than the figure on the Income Chart.

  1. Do I have to complete a separate Meal Benefit Application for each child in my household?

No.  Complete one (1) application for all Anne Arundel County Public School students in the household.  Return Meal Benefit Application to the main office of the youngest child’s school.

  1. Where can I find the Student Identification Number that I need to complete the Meal Benefit Application?

The Student Identification Number is the six (6) digit number assigned to each of your children.  If your child or children have been in the School Meals Program before, they should know this number.  You can also find the Student Identification Number on your children’s Anne Arundel County Public Schools report card.  Your children’s school office can assist you in finding this information.

  1. If I receive a Direct Certification Letter from Food and Nutrition Services stating that my child has been approved to receive free meals for the 2007-2008 school year, do I need to complete a Meal Benefit Application?
No, you do not need to complete a Meal Benefit Application.  The Direct Certification Letter allows your child to receive free meals for the 2007-2008 school year.

  1. In August 2006, I received a Direct Certification Letter that informed me that my child was eligible to receive free meals.  When will this free meal benefit end?

Free meal benefits from the Direct Certification Letter received in August 2006 for the 2006-2007 school year will end on Friday, September 21, 2007.  If you receive a new Direct Certification Letter in August 2007 informing you that your child is again eligible, then your child will receive free meals during the 2007-2008 school year.
  1. What if I did not receive a Direct Certification Letter for the 2007-2008 school year?

In order for your child to be considered, you must complete a Meal Benefit Application for the 2007-2008 school year.  Your 2006-2007 benefits will end on Friday, September 21, 2007.

  1. Can I use my Independence Card Number in place of a Food Stamp Number or TCA Number?

No. The Independence Card Number cannot be used to apply for school meal benefits.

  1. What if the adult household member signing the Meal Benefit Application does not have a Social Security Number?

Check the “I do not have a Social Security Number” box on the Meal Benefit Application.
  1. When do meal benefits from the 2006-2007 school year end?

Your child’s 2006-2007 free or reduced meal benefits will end on Friday, September 21, 2007, unless a new Meal Benefit Application has been submitted and approved.
  1. My child was approved for free/reduced price meals in another county/state.  Does this qualify the child for the same status in Anne Arundel County Public Schools?

No. A Meal Benefit Application for Anne Arundel County Public Schools must be completed.

  1. Where do I send the completed Meal Benefit Application?

Return it to the main office of the youngest child’s school.
  1. What happens if I do not fully complete the required information on the Meal Benefit Application?

The Meal Benefit Application will be returned to you to be completed and processing will be delayed.  Once you complete the application, you should return it to the main office of the youngest child’s school.

  1. When and how will I be notified if my child will qualify for free or reduced price meals?

From the time the Meal Benefit Application is received in the Food and Nutrition Services Office, there could be a ten (10) school day turn-around time for you to be notified.  Remember to have your child bring either a lunch or money to purchase school meals during the waiting period.  The Household Notification Letter, which is sent through the school office, will inform you if your 2007-2008 school year Meal Benefit Application was approved or denied for the Free or Reduced Price Meals program.

  1. Once approved for Free or Reduced Price Meals, what is the process for my child to receive breakfast/lunch at the school site?

Inform your child to enter the six (6) digit Student Identification Number on the keypad next to the cash register.
